The Challenge
The role of deputy sheriffs in Pennsylvania is constantly evolving, and ensuring that their training aligns with current and future demands is critical. PCCD sought to evaluate whether their Basic Training 760-hour curriculum continues to adequately prepare deputy sheriffs for the demands of their roles now and in the future. In partnership with Temple University a job task analysis was determined to be the best approach.

Our Approach
Dering Consulting Group partnered with PCCD to conduct a job task analysis of deputy sheriffs’ roles, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather feedback and analyze the Basic Training 760-hour curriculum.
The Solution
- Deputy Sheriff Comprehensive Job Description: Developing an updated, comprehensive job description with over 60 job tasks to serve as a standardized recruiting and hiring tool across the Commonwealth.
- Survey of Law Enforcement Leaders: Collecting input from sheriffs and chief deputies on the level of effort to achieve proficiency and risk severity for each job task.
- Virtual Summits: Hosting two online summits in which law enforcement leaders reviewed survey results and contributed additional feedback.
- Survey of Deputy Sheriffs: Collecting input from several hundred active deputies on the frequency of performance of each job task.
- Analysis of Training: Conducting a thorough analysis of the Basic Training 760-hour curriculum and providing data-driven recommendations for potential updates.
The Results
Through this initiative, PCCD refined the comprehensive job description for deputy sheriffs, which now serves as a strategic resource for recruitment and hiring across Pennsylvania. Additionally, Dering’s recommendations for curriculum updates ensure that the Basic Training 760-hour program remains relevant and effective, equipping deputy sheriffs with the skills they need to succeed in their roles now and in the future.
Taking a data-driven approach, Dering Consulting Group helped PCCD continue to align its training with real-world demands, enhancing the preparedness and effectiveness of deputy sheriffs across the Commonwealth.
